Electrical Critical Risk

Electrical Rescue & Emergency Response

Last updated: 5 February 2026

The Hazard

A person in contact with live electricity must be separated from the source quickly — delays of even seconds increase injury severity and cardiac arrest risk.

Talking Points

  1. 1 Do not touch the casualty if they are still in contact with electricity — you could also become a victim
  2. 2 Step 1: isolate the power — switch off at the source, unplug, or cut the cable with insulated tools at least 2m from the casualty (use a dry wooden broom handle or PVC pipe)
  3. 3 Step 2: call 000 immediately
  4. 4 Step 3: if unconscious and not breathing — start CPR. Do not stop until professional help arrives
  5. 5 Burns: cool with water for 20 minutes, do not apply butter or ice — cover with clean non-stick dressing
  6. 6 All workers must know the location of the nearest electrical isolation point and emergency contact numbers
  7. 7 Emergency response plan must be on site — review it if you have not seen it recently

Control Measures

  • Electrical emergency response plan posted in switchboard area and break room
  • First aid trained personnel on site at all times
  • Resuscitation poster displayed near switchboard
  • Insulated rescue hooks / dry wooden poles kept near high-risk electrical panels
  • Emergency drill conducted within first week of each project phase
