Mobile Scaffold Towers — Safe Use

Last updated: 20 January 2026

The Hazard

Mobile scaffold towers can tip over if moved with workers or materials on board. Wheel locks and outrigger use is frequently neglected.

Talking Points

  1. 1 Never move a mobile scaffold with anyone on it — everyone must get off first
  2. 2 Lock all castor wheels before climbing — use the diagonal braces
  3. 3 Do not exceed the platform load rating — check the manufacturer plate
  4. 4 Only use on firm, level ground — avoid soft soil, ramps, or slopes
  5. 5 Never stack planks across two bays without additional support
  6. 6 Outriggers or stabilisers required above certain height-to-base ratios (check manufacturer specs)
  7. 7 Tower height should not exceed 3x the minimum base dimension (unstabilised)

Control Measures

  • Manufacturer specifications displayed on tower
  • Wheel lock checklist completed before each use
  • Outriggers deployed when tower exceeds safe height ratio
  • Only trained workers may erect, alter, or move towers
  • Exclusion zone established at tower base in pedestrian areas
