Scaffolding Medium Risk

Scaffold Load Limits & Tag System

Last updated: 10 February 2026

The Hazard

Overloaded scaffolds can collapse. Material stockpiling above rated loads — especially near edges — causes progressive failure.

Talking Points

  1. 1 Every scaffold has a rated load — check the tag: Light (personnel only), Medium, or Heavy duty
  2. 2 Do not store materials on scaffold unless tag explicitly allows it
  3. 3 When storing on scaffold: distribute loads evenly, keep close to structural members
  4. 4 No stacking materials higher than the guardrail — if it exceeds guardrail height, use a crane or hoist
  5. 5 Remove all materials before moving a mobile scaffold
  6. 6 Report any scaffold tag that is missing, damaged, or has conflicting information to your supervisor immediately

Control Measures

  • Scaffold tags fitted at every access point — colour-coded by status (green = safe, red = do not use)
  • Rated load displayed on tag including load type
  • Site induction covers scaffold load limits and tag-out procedures
  • Regular audits by scaffold supervisor confirm tag accuracy
