Scaffolding High Risk

Fall Protection — Scaffold Edge Protection

Last updated: 1 March 2026

The Hazard

Missing or inadequate edge protection on scaffolding is responsible for the majority of scaffold-related fatalities. Guardrails must be in place on ALL open sides before anyone accesses the platform.

Talking Points

  1. 1 Guardrails required on all open sides of working platform — top rail 900mm min, mid rail, and toe board
  2. 2 If guardrail is missing or damaged — do not climb — tag it out and report
  3. 3 Netting or mesh may be required where tools or materials could fall on people below
  4. 4 Do not remove guardrails to pass materials — use a chute or lower materials by hand line
  5. 5 Mesh between toe board and top rail to prevent small objects falling
  6. 6 Monitor weather conditions — strong wind can destabilise guardrail integrity
  7. 7 If fall arrest equipment is required (harness/lanyard), ensure anchor points are rated and inspected

Control Measures

  • Guardrail installed before any access to platform level
  • Harness anchor points tested and tagged (inspection date on tag)
  • Tool tethers used to prevent dropped objects
  • Toe boards minimum 150mm height on all open platform edges
  • Daily inspection of all edge protection equipment
